Ishi: The Archive Performance is a new work written and performed by renowned Native American visual and performance artist James Luna. In 1911, an Indian man walked into a small northern California town. His appearance inspired fright, laughter, and pity from the populace. Anthropologists came to the conclusion that Ishi was the last of his tribe and decided that for his welfare and for the advancement of science, he would love out his remaining years as a living specimen at the University of California, Berkeley’s campus museum. Based on archival work, James Luna has created a powerful exploration of Ishi’s life, silence, and the the place that he should hold in the history and cultures of California. By James Luna (Pooyukitchchum/Ipai) with Jeneen Frei Njootli (Vuntut Gwitchin) and special guest Tracy Lee Nelson (Luiseno/Diegueno) at UCSD.

We are pleased to announce that the UC Collaboratory for Ethnographic Design was awarded a Workshop Grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation Conference Program. This grant will allow CoLED to host invited scholars from around the globe for our fall 2016 Conference, Ethnography and Design: Mutual Provocations.
The Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, Inc. is a private operating foundation dedicated to the advancement of anthropology throughout the world. Located in New York City, it is one of the major funding sources for international anthropological research.

I. “Theatrical devising”
(Cristiana Giordano, Department of Anthropology, UCD and Alvaro Hernández & Regina Gutiérrez, Department of Performance Studies, UCD)
This workshop is an exploration of and a cross pollination between research and narrative practices in theater and anthropology. By creating a dialogue between these disciplines in a laboratory format, we hope to pose questions and engage techniques in ways that will enrich our engagement with anthropological questions and performative productions. We will practice embodiment as a practice to slow down thinking and to create a space for new encounters with our ethnographic material. Or, rather, we will practice thinking with the body, and embodying with and through words. (more…)

The Studio for Ethnographic Design at the University of California, San Diego, hosted the first in a series of workshops among members of CoLED. The workshop was held on April 3rd and 4th, 2015, with a series of collaborative and design-based exercises to stimulate discussion about the current state of ethnography, in the field, at the academy, and in the various communities shaped by ethnographic projects.
This workshop was the first of a series of events, to be hosted at various UC campuses, to develop a framework, set of concerns, and strategies that will be further explored at a culminating public conference in Fall 2016. The second CoLED workshop is scheduled to be hosted at the University of California, Irvine on October 23rd and 24th, 2015.
Thank you to all the participants, faculty, postdocs and graduate students, who made the UCSD workshop such an exciting event!
